I want to re-zone my heating zone in my house from 1 zone to 3 zones because the one zone system is not effective. How do I do this? Is it possible? Has it been done before by a DoItYourselfer?

Ed,
I have central heat with a furnace along with forced AC with a digital thermostat. The house is brand new, built last year (4/2002). The house is heated through ducts via the ceiling and floor vents. I also have a hot water heater, but it's not running my heater. Is there a way to re-zone it to 3 so that the temperature can be controlled on all three levels. As it is now, the house is improperly heated in the winter and cooled during the summers. I think redesigned zoning would be better. Can you help and is this enough information. Hey, thanks for responding.

the problem will be airflow. if 1 or 2 zones are not needed, airflow restriction will cause the a/c to freeze up and the furnace to trip on high limit. a return bypass will need to be installed. not a typical diy job, get some contractors to price it and tell what they recommend, quotes are free

Im with hvac4u you could need a by pass there to zone it.
But first here you said 3 levels just how many sq ft in the home. How big is the heater and AC that you have here. From just that Id say the whole set up was not put in right. I dont like zone controls but they do work some like for just 2 zones at the most. I think I would have put in 2 or 3 units to do a good jpb in the home if it is large. Get a good hvac to look at it and see if they could set another unit and tie in to the duct work on that level.
(4-2002) New home. Id have the builder and the hvac guy back on that job right now that it is cold. You should have got them when it was hot also. You should have a year on the home to get them to make it right. So kick A** here and get them on it. As bad as the job sounds I know if I did it they would have me back on it to make it right. We back all our work so should they.;) ED
just my .02 cents again
