I have just finished my basement and I want to install carpet on a concrete floor. My question is this I want to glue down the carpet is it possible to glue along the edges of the carpet only. The reason I ask this is because I also have padding going down and I'm not sure if glue along the edge is enough to hold.

the method you are referring to is a double stick method,in which the pad is glued to the floor then the carpet is glued to the pad.You cannot use this method with the foam pad ,you need to use a rubber pad for this.

What you are wanting to do will not work, carpet does not work like vinyl and will not shrink and tighten up over time, and then if you have a seam in there the problem gets worse.

Why not strecth it in?All you'll have to do is put down tack strip.Thats a lot better method than trying to glue the carpet at the edges or to the pad

I think you mught have mis understood me if I glue the padding down and leave it short from the walls maybe about 4-6 inches away can I glue the edge of the carpeting and would it be enough to hold it. I really don't want to use tackless I am not that good at laying carpet. I thought going with glue it would be easier thanks for your help.

Have you purchased your carpet yet?

You may want to look into a carpet with an attached cushion or modular carpet. They are pretty DIYer friendly.

I'm looking to do the same exact thing.

glue/tape down some padding, and then glue/tape down the carpeting right over it

So I can't use foam padding?

What kind of adhesive would anyone recommend?

I agree with dan, the carpet tiles with pad attached is perfect for these people, it will be alot easier.
You cannot cut the pad 6 inches short and glue the edges of the carpet to the floor. It will fail.
Either glue the pad to the floor, and the carpet FULLY to the pad, or go to your local flooring store and ask for Tesserea, or go to home depot and ask for Legato.

I wouldnt want you to do things wrong and have to pay for more material.
good luck

I would recommend one of the attached cushion products since they can be correctly installed with minimal instruction and be installed correctly.

The most important day in the lifetime of your carpet is the day it is installed.
