Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - Briggs 5hp funpower replacement??

Hi.

The Briggs 5hp funpower engine (# 136232) in my sons gokart has had allot of abuse & wont run now. Instead of rebuilding it Id like to replace it with a new engine, yet cant seem to find the direct replacement model # since all the funpower engines were recalled because of a leaking fuel cap.

Can anyone with a B&S book or contact tell me the model # I would need? & if a larger hp model would also fit without modifications?

Any 6.5hp or less engine from Briggs or tecumseh should have the same mounting pattern, but the shaft size may vary. You probably have a 3/4" shaft with keyway. A model 120412 is the newer overhead valve style briggs engine. It takes remote throttle, has a manual choke, remote stop, 3/4" shaft w/keyway, 3 quart tank, and is 6hp. Should fit right in place with little or no changes. You should be able to pick one up for around $250.00 to $275.00 new.

The B&S site is a joke! I even got this message from them about my old engine replacement.

"Unfortunately, we do not list a possible direct replacement for your current engine. However, I suggest having your

My engine does have the 3/4" shaft and is 2 1/4" long from the shoulder. It has a 11/64 wide key way. The shaft exits 4 3/16 up from the base mounting plate. & mounting bolts holes are 6 3/8" long X 3 1/8" wide.

The second listing you showed would work, but some minor modification might be necessary, like throttle hookup for one. I have seen new and nearly new engines like your old one on ebay for reasonable prices too.

BOTH B & S AND Tecumseh have gotten "squirrely" about
kart engines, and will state "EMPHATICALLY"...."The use
of other than a designated ATV/kart engine is strictly
prohibited from use". It's a "legal thing" with them, and
for good reason. If you find a "standard" engine that
someone can "make work"....you'll have to do that....ON
YOUR OWN. Northern Tool, Great Plains...etc, DO SELL
kart ready engines. The Tecumseh engine is also available
from a variety of sources. Part # 205109A (5HP OHV), and
206106A (replaced by 206122A 6HP OHV) will be widely
recognized by the numerous engine seller websites on the
internet, and by local Tecumseh Dealers convenient to you.

I like the ball bearing 6 hp but its not listed as a go kart engine so I assume it has no throttle return spring. Correct? And would the ball bearing out live the plain bearing?

Either engine will work on a go-kart. Some differences between gokart engines and utility engines are: Small differences in throttle connections, exhaust shield, possible fuel tank and cap design changes, etc... The ball bearing PTO will outlast the plain bearing.
