We are planning to remove the wall-to-wall carpeting that is covering the original hard wood floors (from the 1960s) in the hallway and on the stairs. How should we repair the small holes in the floor from where the padding was tacked down? Is it necessary to refinish the floors?
We are also interested in advice from anyone who has done this before. What should we know before we begin?

mgdouglass,
Hello, welcome, & Happy Holidays. Sorry your post must have got missed for a bit, we usually have a little better response time.
A bit of wood putty which closely matches the wood will take care of staple holes & the like. Be prepared to have to scrape some of the padding, as many times in high traffic areas, it'll seemingly adhered to the wood floors. I'd be surpriesed if the floor doesn't need at least a good sanding and a fresh finish coat. Do you know what kind of wood you've got down?

I am in the process right now of attempting to restore 1950's wood floors which have carpet pad residue all over the floors. I have been using a puddy knife anong with some wood oil and working in small areas. I am not willing to refinish everything.
Do you have some advice of other tools to use or tricks? I am loosing my mind!!!
