I have a 7 hp briggs and stratton engine on my ariens snowblower. I had it in the shop last year for a complete tuneup and it worked great. Took it out for the first time over the weekend and here is what happens. I start it up and it runs great but after i take it out and start using it, it becomes annoying because when it is under load it will all of a sudden start to spit and sputter like it is going to stall , I have to push the throttle to idle and then slowly move it back to high speed to get it to recover normally. If i move the throttle up to fast it will stall. It doesn't do it every time it is under load but it is sperratic. It might happen 3 or 4 times while I am doing a driveway. any suggestions. thanks

Is the gas fresh? It sounds like there is a little trash/water in the carburetor. The trash could have gotten there from running the tank dry last time you used it (when doing this, the tiny bit of trash that always collects in the blottom of gas tanks, especially metal ones since they rust, will get sucked up into the carburetor), or by using the same gas that was in the tank since last winter. And water would collect in the tank from condinsation or if you ever removed the gas cap while there was snow around the top of the tank where it coud have fallen in. Either way, if the gas is old, drain it and put fresh gas, and if the gas isn't old, then the carburtor will have to be cleaned.

It could easily be water, trash, and/or stale gas as mentioned, but give this a try before going into that carburetor. There is a screw that goes up from underneath the carb. Back it out 1/4 to 1/2 turn and see if it straightens out.

Lucky for you that you have a Briggs. Most Ariens, at least to my knowledge, have the Techumseh. Fine engine but the recoil starter is problematic to say the least.
Anyway, let's talk about your issue: small 4 cycle engines only need clean fuel, air and spark to run right.
I'd suggest you try flushing the fuel and make sure you replace it with new petrol to which you have added an appropriate amount of Stabil and drygas.
99% of the starting and run issues I see are related to dirty fuel or carb adjustments.
