I built a range hood vent frame and covered it with plywood. I would like to coat the surface with something that would give the appearance of smooth plaster. Can I apply joint compound directly to the plywood, do I need to prime first, or is there a better method overall to producing this

You can put joint compound directly over wood. Joint compound recomendations are to prime prior to application so I would do it. Also prime after. Some staining will bleed through so use a stain blocker afterwords.
