Hi all,

My wife accidently removed a paint spot on our satin finished hardwood floor with a "Scotch Brite" pad (the kind where there's a sponge on one side, and the green pad on the other). It's not terribly bad, but the problem is it's in the middle of the floor. It basically looks like the satin finish was just minorly sanded down.

Can I do anything to repair this? I was thinkging about some automotive rubbing compound/glaze and a high-speed buffer, or some 000000 steel wool, or .. ???

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Ry.

Rubbing compound might do it. I know a piano refinisher that uses it. A finer grade of Scotchbrite and some elbow grease. Steel wool (even #0000) may be coarser than the scratches you have now. The usual abrasives for polishing out furniture finishes are pumice (3F and 4F) and rottenstone. You need to be very careful with any polish to not go through the surface film into the wood. Using a finer than needed abrasive will take longer, but is less likely to go through. If you get a shiny spot you can always dull it down again.
