I recently scrapped and sanded my bathroom ceiling (plaster) because the paint was all chipped and literally falling on my head. Once the old paint was scraped away, I applied a coat of primer/sealer. Now, less than 3 months later, the same thing is happening. The bathroom is vented (window) and there isn't a leak in my roof. Why does this keep happening and how can I fix it once and for all?

What type of primer and paint did you use?

I used Speed-Wall PVA by Glidden - an interior primer. I have not yet painted as we were trying to agree on a color scheme.

Forget the water-based primer. Scrape it down again and prime with a slow drying heavy bodied oil primer. Something comparable to an alkyd enamel underbody. Then if you patch the areas that peeled, prime those again with the oil. Then you can paint with latex product for the finish coat.

I'm a loyal glidden customer BUT speedwall has got to be one of the poorest primers on the market. For bathrooms alkyd primer is what i use and never experienced problems.

PVA primer is for new sheetrock, anyway. That would have hurt the best plan.
