I have read through the posts on painting a brick fireplace. I see cleaning and applying a good masonary primer is needed then paint. What are the best tools used for priming/painting the brick, a thick roller or a good size brush? My mortor has a deep inset.

I'd cut it in with a 3" brush, and roll it out with a 1" or 1 1/2" nap. It that wont get into the crevices, then you will probably have to brush in all the mortar joints and roll the surface.

And if you roll it out with a large nap roller, you might want to back brush it to avoid stippling the finish.
