in order to do some painting, i removed the mounting screws to our programmable thermostat but left it wired. after remounting the unit and turning on, there is an audible "click" to turn furnace (gas forced air) on, but the furnace doesnt respond: no ignition, no fan. we even bought a brand new thermostat and have it correctly wired. the previous one had worked fine until it was removed from mounting. what can i try now? there are no tripped breakers; furnace is 4 years old. thanks

check the furnace for a circuit board that may contain a blade type fuse. it could have blown when tstat was off. does the tstat have batteries?

just a thought, turn power off to furnace for 5 min, it may be locked for some reason. nothing happens at call for heat? does a/c work?

sounds like we are not getting 24 volts to the tstat, do you have a meter? possible broken wire behind tstat maybe. jump r and w at the furnace, does it light?

well, our daughter found the problem: she noticed that the GFI switch in the bathroom had somehow been tripped; when she restored it she suddenly heard the furnace kick in--obviously furnace is on same circuit. what a relief--so simple--thanks much for all the suggestions meantime! i'll be sure to use these forums in the future. :D
