Hi to all,

I have a Goodman GMP100-4 gas downflow furnance mounted in the attic. When a call for heat is made, a blower comes on, and after a preprogrammed amount of time, the HSI glows. Gas is then opened and ignites. But when the HSI stop glowing, the gas shuts off and there's no more flame. The second blower that pushes the warm air through the house never come on. That could be because the flame goes out so fast. Any idea whats causing the flame to extinguish?

could be a flame sensing failure. i assume the electrical wiring is the same as last year, if not polarity could be swapped. does the board have a diagnostic light? how long do the flames burn? clean the flame sensor first.

Thanks HVAC4U for the reply.

No work has been done yet. Wires have not been removed. I have to go back and check for any diagnostic light(s). But to answer your question about the flame. It remains lite only for about 5 or more seconds. I know the HSI is not programmed to remain on very long. The extinguishing of the flame seems to coincide with the HSI cycle completing. I must admit I think I have a fan control problem that was talked about in this forum late last spring that I never got around to fixing (weather got warm and I kept putting it off). Well I was going to finally fix that problem went this problem arose. I don't know if the two could be interrelated!

typically these are a few reasons for flame failure

flame sensor not sensing flame. generally flames run 5 or so sec.
clean sensor
check ground to furnace

pressure switch dropping out
there is more load after flames begin, a weak switch will drop
out
check to see that it remains closed when flame fails

high limit
generally an auto reset, trips and kills fire when overtemp is
sensed in cabinet
generally caused by dirty filter, coil or bad blower mtr
generally trips after 3 or so minutes

check polarity
be sure black to black on hi volt input

just a couple of thoughts

Any idea where the filter is located on this model? Is it easy to access and replace? I replace the duct filters in the ceiling every 3 to 6 months, but I must admit I have not replaced any filters on the unit itself.

if the filters are at the return grille(s) there will not be one in the unit.

I took your advise and cleaned the flame sensor. I turned off the power and gas before doing so. I remove it and cleaned it with very fine sand paper and reinstalled it. Turn the gas and power back on. Now when I call for heat, the HSI glows but no gas is release to burn. I double check to see if the gas valve knob was in the ON position and it is. I don't have a clue why the gas doesn't appear to function when it did shortly before working on the flame sensor. The only other components that were even touch were the three round button looking components that appear to have a reset plunger in the middle of them. Don't know what they are. They each have two wires connected to them. The plungers didn't seem to go in or out, so I left them alone. Any idea about the gas not functioning or what those three round components are?
