I have gas cooking and oil heat, how hard is it to convert from the oil heat to gas heat?

Hi:megan

First you will need to contact the gas utility and ask if their equipment can handle the added capacity.

Next, contact several heating agencies in your area for estimates. You whole existing heating system will need to be changed out.

The heating contractors should be able to refer you to a list of plummers to verify if the existing houseline can also handle the added capacity.

The plummers will be able to determine what size gas line will be needed and the cost to install it where the heating system will be installed.

Suggestion:
If you do not have a gas dryer but may want one in the future, add that line while the heater line is being added. Ditto for a gas water heater if the existing one is currently electric.

Good Luck,

I guess it wouldn't be that "hard" -- a little spendy maybe. If you're ready to make the investment, here's what I'd do.
First, (as Mr. Bartco says) contact your gas company and make sure your aware of what you would have to do to get your house plumbing ready for the conversion. Some gas companies will be a great deal of help when it comes to re-plumbing and re-routing lines if necessary. They can also refer you to certified HVAC contractors to start getting bids for the project. In my area the gas company will do the plumbing at no charge for new gas burning appliances (maybe yours will too).
Good luck!
