Planning stages of a remodel which would eliminate the chimney which currently only handles the boiler exhaust. Is adding a basement side-power vent a reasonable option/tough to do? I thought perhaps I'd switch to a gas water heater (from current electric $$$$!) as long as I was doing this and use the power vent for it as well. Any thoughts appreciated.

I don't think you can combine the boiler and water heater on one powerventer. You probably would be better off buying a power vented water heater and not having to try to make it work with the boiler venter. It isn't too difficult but there is some interlock wiring that can be confusing. Make sure you check codes first because there are restrictions on distances to windows, doors and walkways from the vent hood.

thanks for the info. Talking with someone local indicates that this is not an option. I'll look into it further. I'll post more info when I locate it for everyone interested!

With a boiler, you don't need a separately fired water heater. You can get what is called an indirect water heater, which is basicaly a tank that uses the muscle of your existing boiler to make almost endless hot water. I had one in my last house and loved it, never ran out of hot water. These tanks are super insulated, and it cost about 10 bucks a month for my hot water.
