Product info:

Thermostat - Honeywell CT300 series
Furnace - Janitrol, Model GMP 100-4

I am having a problem with the furnace/blower. Last winter we noticed that the blower would come on by itself, even if the thermostat was turned off. We talked with an A/C repairman who said not to worry about it, which did not really matter since it did not happen all of the time.

Well, now the blower is running continually and the heat cycles on. When the weather is somewhat warm I turn off the power to the furnace, but, now that it is cold we need the heat.

Advice?

You will need to do some troubleshooting to get to the bottom of this. It sounds like the call for the blower is engaged all the time.

First thing is to disconnect the thermostat (turn the power off to the furnace first). Once you do this turn the power back on and see if there is any activity in the furnace. If the blower still runs there could be a fault on the control board in the furnace that needs to be repaired.

If not, try manually calling for heat by shorting the supply and heat wire coming to the thermostat and see if the heating cycle works OK. If it does it may be a faulty thermosatat.

Another possibility is a short on the back of the thermostat at the wire terminals so you could try cleaning the back of the thermostat. Also you can open the furnace and wiggle the wires on the control board. I would suggest doing this first before trying any repairs/replacement.

Not that anyone probably cares about what happened, but, we replaced the thermostat and the problem has been taken care of!

Wish we had done that earlier! Thanks for the advice.
