What would be the best material to use when building window boxes? The ones we have last about 8 yrs before they crack, rot and split. This will be the 3rd set we need to make. The present ones are cedar and I doubt they will be there by the end of winter. They are not filled with dirt-I use plants in light weight plastic pots and fill around them with peat. We live in MN so the boxes do get to experience the "joys" of our northern weather. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Cedar would be my choice - sh last for years.
But you could also use pressure treated lumber.

redwood will last, cedar. There are some other rot resistant woods but they are tough to find. Locust is one.
