Hello,
I am planning on installing granite tile countertops in the near future. We currently have pink laminate counters and they must go. Can I tile directly over the laminate counters or can I lay down cement backer-board over the laminate? Also, can I polish the non-finished edges on the border tiles once installed? Any helpfull hints and tips regarding this project would be greatly appreciated.

Polished edging on granite is a real art. I would get real educated before attempting, and I would recommend a pro on that one.
I am not a fan of installing tiles on existing laminate, unless you can guarantee yourself, that there is absolutely no seperation right now, or there will not be in the future.
I am looking forward to other thoughts on this.
C'mon pro's! Change my mind! :)

Can the laminate meet flatness requirements for stone? And for how long? I'd rip the whole counter top up and start with two layers of 3/4 in. plywood, one layer 1/4 CBU set in thinset. I believe in overkill for stone installation. Granite is $$$, why take a chance on the longivity of the laminate.
