I will be putting 2 x 2 tiles on my kitchen walls between the counter top and kitchen cabinets, but I want to add a decorative 2" oak strip above the counter back splash and than start my tile.
My questions is, Can I butt my tiles right up against the oak strip or do I need to space it and fill in with grout?

I would be worried about wood movement (expansion/contraction) due to climate changes. Recomend you apply the tile above the wood strip (grout line width) and use a flexible caulking in place of the grout. Grout manufacturers offer same color combos for kitchen/bath applications in both sanded and non-sanded varieties. Good luck.

Ditto what the last poster said, leave the gap & use caulk between the wood & tile.
