About 5 years old, now making a high pitch noise about 10 minutes after being on.

What is going on and is this an easy fixed problem?

Thanks..
Winter

My 27" '90 Sony started doing that a week after I brought it home. It looked like the repairman just re-heated a cold solder-joint on the back of the tube, but he never told me exactly what he did.

The TV is still going strong, so it's not likely that it was actualy causing any damage to the unit.

Usually this symtom is associated with the Flyback transformer being defective.

How much did it cost you to get it looked at and fixed?

Ok, what is that? Could I replace it myself, and is it worth it to fix it? (price wise?)

Thanks

Sure its worth fixing if the TV is worth anything to you. It's also known as the high voltage transformer and is not something you should fool with if you don't know what you are doing . take it to someone who does. And it shouldn't be too expensive - ask first.

I think it was a cheap $35 house-call, but it was also 13 years ago and under warranty, so Foley's was paying.

I wouldn't touch it myself. There's a reason they call it a fly-back transformer. You touch it, you fly back.

It's actually trivial to drain the voltage, but it's never been worth the risk to me if I screwed up.

Ok Ya'll

I really appreciate all of your help. There is a place here in my small town that has been working on electronics forever. I will call them on Monday and give them the info and see if they can quote me a price. I would just hate to be taken for a ride when I could just as easily get a 31" for under 300, ya know?

Thanks again!
