My house is about 40 years old. Did a lot of new sheetrock work when we moved in 1.5 years ago.
New Problem:
I am getting cracking on the ceiling in some stress points of the house. One of the cracks is about 6ft long and goes from one corner to the other...
Now I am seeing another one starting that is getting bigger in another section of the upstairs. I have spackled a few times, but obviously the spackle just cracks right through.
One of my buddys suggested wood filler on the dry wall to allow for shrink and expand, which may allow the crack to stay hidden.
I have a suspicion on the source of why the cracking is occuring, and that is a separate conversation....it is not overhead pressure on the rock....
What can I use to fill the cracks and hide them, for a long time. I am tired of looking at this. I can do spackle very well, and thought about putting some tape over it, even though it is not on a seam....Ideas???
Crack is about 1-2mm wide, but is staggard across the room...

Use the sticky tape or mesh then apply a couple of coats of sheetrock mud and sand.

Will this stop the cracking permanently???

No, but if you would hire a professional, this is what they would do. It will last longer than anything else.

First thing I'd look at is to make sure all the seems & buts are secure. If you've got movement in the board due to inadequate fastening, this needs to be corrected. You can successfully tape a joint that isn't solidly fastened.
Once you've determined that this is not the issue, I'd agree with the web tape, it will hold longer than anything else short of redoing the ceiling completely.
