A good friend has given me his fairly new carpet that was in his home since he has severe allergies. I am planning on laying this carpet myself and will rent a kick-board. Does anyone have any helpful tips before I dive in?

hire someone experienced with the installation of carpet. This is not a good place to start you're floorlaying career, not only does this stuff weigh a ton but the tools required to do this are expensive as well this is not something that a hammer or other every day tools will take care of.Most of what you need are specialty tools and are not something that can be rented. The kicker and stretcher you can but the irons and knives and and wall trimmers are not.If you do want to continue get back to us and give us more info on what the carpet is and room particulars and we'll talk you through it:cool:

Cushionback or Kangaback carpet is suitable for amateur installation because it doesn't need to be stretched and can be held down with double-sided carpet tape though seams can still be a challenge for the inexperienced. Normal carpet that needs to be stretched onto a tackless strip should be installed by a professional.

rbekamom,
Us pros are a proud bunch, aren't we? Sometimes a bit too proud. There are those who forget this is a DIY board and that's what you want to do.
Yes, you can install the carpet yourself. Some are easier than others. Take a look at the instructions here ---> http://doityourself.com/carpet/howtoinstallcarpet.htm (you may have to copy and paste the address in your address bar).
Most of the bigger tools can be rented. Many rental places have "kits" that include the knives and other special tools you might need. You can also make do with a utility knife and other things you might have around the house.
Check back if you have more questions.

I would hire a pro, it's gonna cost less in the long run unless you're handy as a shirt pockett
