I am finishing my basement. The walls are 2x4 studs spaced 16" without spacers, (i.e. horizontal fire stoppers). If I hang 1/2" thick 4x12' drywall sheets horizontally, I will have a lot fewer seems. Many walls are <12'.
Is this acceptible?
I am concerned that the long horizontal seems
will not always be in front of framing, (only every 16") and may easily crack.
Thanks
Bill.

You definitely hang horizontally! Nothing will crack as long as you attach it correctly to the studs.

Ditto what Coops said, all I can add is a recommendation that you use drywall adhesive on the walls.
