I am re-tiling a fireplace surround. I have removed the old tile and what is left is a 1/2" to 1" thick mortar bed. It appears to be intact and secured to the wall.

Should I remove the old mortar bed before placing the new tile or can I just apply the new tile with thinset over the existing mortar bed?

as long as there are no cracks and the thing is rigid and no movement can occur then go ahead
