I will be laying a tile fireplace that consists of three elements. A hearth, surround and shelf above the surround.

Here were my plans, in sequence as I have planned.

I will be using thinset for almost all of the tile.

I know I will have to create a template, and planned on laying the surround first, supporting the tile above the fireplace opening with plywood, and then using the tiles on the sides to assist in supporting the two outside tiles of said opening. I am using 16 inch tiles, so there will be four total within this layer. The wood will support 2 tiles and the inside edges of the 2 outside tiles. I have determined that if I lay the tiles on the sides of the fireplace opening (approximately 8 inches wide), the spacers/tile will support the outside edges until the thinset dries enough to hold the tile.

The shelf above the surround extends in front of the surround by about 2 inches. There will be tile on the top, bottom and front surface. I have decided that I can begin this shelf as soon as I am done laying the surround as I will not be touching the surround tile. My thought was to put a template across the bottom of the shelf, and lay the face first, then follow directly behind with the top surface, since looking at the face, I will see a full tile and no grout lines on the top or bottom of the face. The grout line will actually be on top of the shelf. I would then wait for the thinset to dry, then use another template to hold the bottom tiles level while they dry.

Once the above dries enough to where I can move the template, I would start to lay the hearth. The hearth is actually a16 inches deep and 16 inches above the floor. The front , below the hearth is drywall. I will tile the surface, and put a 2” lip of tile along the face over the drywall. The surface tile of the hearth will extend about ½ inch beyond the face, so you will see a grout line in front, rather than on the surface.

Once the hearth is done, I was planning to use just a simple mastic for the 2 inch lip since heat will not be a factor. I am also going to create a template to hold this tile while it dries.

Questions:

1- What sequence shall I lay these tiles in? Am I planning correctly?
2- How long will it take for the thinset to dry enough so that I can remove a temlate and proceed to my next sequence?
Do I need all these templates?

Thanks again for all of your help!
