I will be installing a ceramic floor in my upstairs bathroom. I've used Durok brand backerboard in the past and been happy with it. I was just wondering though are there other brands of backerboard other than Durok? Is there one brand that is by far better than another? Thank you for any information anyone can provide.

I thought they wanted other backer boards listed!? The first cement board was wonderboard invented by Paul Dinkle ,super nice guy, dam good fisherman.Ted Clear was involved in the manf. end off it. But I think the cement board concept itself was Paul. What I listed was all the boards used in the tile industry not all are cement based.

Darn tootin'!

Wonderboard was definitely the first CBU on the market.

Do people still use CBU nowadays? ;)

There are many brands of concrete underlayment board (CUB) available that will provide a 'stiff' underlayment for ceramic tile installation. These products tend to help prevent movement beneath tile but will not always prevent problems of spacing of joists and other structural issues have not been addressed. Any movement in subfloor will tend to result in cracked grout and possibly cracked tiles. A successful ceramic tile installation requires that you take every precaution outlined by the Ceramic Tile Institute (CIA). Any shortcuts will tend to result in less than successful results.
