OK question #2
Has anyone hooked one of these up yet (PC5400 - DSC RS-232 Printer Module) Do I have to run it into my computer before it sends to the printer ? I have a old BJ200e Cannon printer, it works great but I have opted for better quality for computer work. Can I get the Module and install it into my DSC 832 and run a patch cable directly to the printer, and leave my commuter out of it.
I am looking to get this because of all the time spent out of the country, and when I get back I could check the log as to see who entered ( assigned passwords) and when they left....
Is it worth the $80.00 ???????????????
Thanks all:D

As long as you can find a serial to parallel adapter, you can make it work (never checked for one, so I don't even know if there is such a thing.) You don't need a computer.
However, that being said - you would be better off monitoring the system through a company that has online access to alarm history. Then, not only could you check history at home, but you could login and check from anywhere in the world.
Good luck!

Never had to mess with one, myself. There is a gadget that is supposed to support parallel printers off of a series output. I don't know how well they work, It's never been a need.

Hi All
ok i have be down for a few days, reloading the OS on my laptop.
but good news on the printer thing, The board the you install has a phone jack on it, so you plug in the phone cord to it and you have a connection that plugs into your printer, well it has a phong jack in that end aswell. So it is as easy as 123, hook it up and set it in the keypad and you are off. I have a few pictures of it if anyone is intrested, Not sure how to do it on this site but email me and i will send them to ya....

Yes, it is that simple - but, like we were saying, the problem is that the phone jack goes to a serial port. MrRon listed a site that has a device to adapt the serial to parallel - but have you checked that site out yet??? You may be better off finding a cheap serial printer somewhere.
It may be possible to connect the serial to the computer too, then just have the computer log your activity, but I don't know exactly what protocol it uses to communicate with the attached printer - and if there is any software that could translate it for you.
Just make sure you do some serious research before you purchase anything.
