I want to build a deck approx. 6 feet off the ground to set a hot tub in. Are there any specs for the joists. Should I use a steel beam for strength. How far apart should the joists be. Thanks

The first qestion you need to answer is how much will the hot tub weigh?

If you are going to have a "standard" hot tub (8' or less in diameter), then spacing your joists at 12" apart in the area where the tub will be should be fine. How close your girders are that are supporting those joists will be determined by how large of a joist you are using. But, since a tub is a 'live' load, make sure that you use extensive cross-bracing under the deck.
