Hi,

I live in a newer house on the west coast and unfortunately the trend here is toward less millwork. I have a opening between rooms, roughly 4 feet wide (no door), that I would like to add a casing to. I know how to make the frame, but there is a adjoining wall on one side that would cause the outside of the frame on that side to be butted right against the wall. I know this is not ideal, but I still think it will look a lot better than just a bare wall.

My question is, is this a absolute no-no in terms of style?

I could narrow the opening to gain more room on that side but I'd rather not.

I know there are not necessarily hard and fast rules on these things but I don't want to do something where an experienced carpenter would cringe.

My house was built in 1939. The casing sits against the wall in more than one place around the door. I think style is changeable. You would never see a house built this way nowadays. I would install the casing and not worry about it. I bet nobody will notice that it is against the wall.
