I have a new idea for deck board layout on my deck.

The decking runs paralllel to the house and it is about 28 feet long. I'm thinking about 2x6 redwood and dividing the deck lengthwise into 3 sections, with two 2x6 planks running perpindicular to the house 1/3 of the way in from each end which would be the dividing strips. This way, all of the planks parallel to the house would be the same length, about 9 feet.

Does anyone have any opinions either aesthetically or functionally with this plan?

Thanks

rob,

This question should be asked of you, "What do you like?"

However you want the deck to look should be the only thing that matters. Once you have determined the decking layout, then you can do the layout for the joists and beams. As long as you are planning this out in this order, you will not have to redesign the
support system once in progress.

Hope this helps!

I agree with you Doug.

The problem is that I haven't really payed enough attention in the past to deck configurations.

If I could lay it out and see it in different configurations, it would probably be obvious to me which one I like the most. I only get one shot though!

I posted just in case anyone had seen anything like this and it was really great or really bad...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and deck designs are whatever the owner thinks is beautiful!!

If you want to run all of the deck boards parallel to the back of the house for 28', and that's 'beautiful', then do it. But if you want to add something with a little more thought (double 2X6 boards that are perpendicular to the house, breaking it into thirds, diagonal decking, maybe a herringbone pattern, maybe a curve or two) and THAT'S beautiful to you, then, by all means, DO IT!!

Just draw the thing out, IN SCALE, on paper first. This way, you can look at the decking pattern (first drawing), then figure out the joist pattern that's needed to support it (second drawing), and the girder patern needed to support the joists (third drawing).

You've got it!!
