I have a Gateway EV910, a 19" crt monitor, on my computer thats giving me fits. Its three years old, so it might be fixable to those who know electronics.

While on, the screen width stays where it should, but the top and bottom start to converge towards the center. On occassion, it converges to a solid horizontal line, then back and forth, back and forth.

Eventually, the screen goes black.

It does this with the computer on or off, where it shows a test screen mode.

On occasion, I can slap the case, and it will correct itself for a short time, but eventually goes back to the same old problem.

For you Gurus out there with experience, is it worth fixing?

Can a TV shop do it, or does it need to go to a specialty shop?

A new one will cost over $300, so a cheap fix would be nice.

Thanks in advance,

JT

It sounds like a cold solder joint int the vertical section of the monitor. take the monitor apart, heat the bottom side of the chassis with a hair dryer for a few minutes, then take a non-conductive item, (set now powered on) and scrape the bottom of the board with plastic spoon or whatever till you find the find the joint. The set should be senstive to your touch, (i,e) the ploblem should come and go with the touch. Power down the monitor, touch up the joint and you be on your way. There may also be bad capictors, if the pic is not restored to full vetical deflection.:)
