I have a Sony Stereo Tape Deck. It plays tapes good but when I try to record through my Marantz reciever and from my Sony Turntable it give me all kinds of fluttering and noise. I looked in the manual and it said to clean the pinch roller and some other thing with a C, I did it and it still gives me fluttery sounds. I have never really had this problem before and I dont know what it is.

Model is: TC-FX4

Fluttery sound can be caused by a faulty capstan motor. The bearings could have gone 'lumpy'. If the motor drives the capstan via a belt, you could just check that the capstan flywheel rotates freely. Stiffness of the bearing there might cause flutter. Anything that makes the capstan motor work a bit harder than it should might do it. Prime suspicion is towards the motor itself though.

Pre-recorded tapes would sound OK because these are recorded by a machine in good condition. This means that there would only be half the amount of flutter present when played on your tape deck. This wouldn't be as noticable as the tapes that are recorded and played on your deck.

Ever tapes not recorded on this machine work. The Capstan spins fine, there doesnt seem to be any problems with it.

First, check your cables and make sure they're secure. Try recording something off the radio through the recvr, if you have the same problem you eliminated the turntable.

If it recorded the radio without a problem, check your turntable, it should have a strobe light to monitor the speed, make sure it's locked and the band appears to be still.

If you have the same problem check for another output on the recvr and connect the tape deck. You may have a bad output.

I assume you already inspected the tape to make sure it wasn't streeecched. Try another brand, you may have gotten a bad batch. Good Luck

Most likely it is dirty record/play switches. Hold the stop button down, then push the record button and release while holding the stop button down. Do this about 100 times. Then try recording. I'll bet it will work now.
