I just attempted to do my house and I can tell you it is a fairly involved calculation based on several factors -- you'd do best to go get a book at the library.

There is no rule of thumb for X amount of BTU for every sq ft.

Home load will vary alot from home to home.. Depends on your outdoors conditoin, windows, doors, insulation, roof venting, amount of windows, where they face.. and list goes on and on..

The dealer who install a new system should do a heat load/lost of any home they work in.

But you can download a program

download the free trial program, and take your time doing some reading and how to use it.. Once you get it figured out, it's EASY!

Good luck! :-)

With only 900 sq ft chances are you will be limited by the choice of the smallest furnace avalible.
I've got 25K in my house through the water heater and it does the job down to 15 degrees (house is 1920 800 sq ft)
The smallest furnace you can buy I belive is a 40K.
Of course running a load calc it the CORRECT way to do it :)
