Seems like it should be a relatively straight forward job. Are there any tips or tricks I should know? How dense should the inner foam be?

What kind of kitchen chairs are they? It can be simple or difficult, depending on style. You can also seek very good advice at www.upholsteryshop.org, the forum is in the help menu. additionally, www.carrscorner.com, and www.upholster.com

The chairs have a cane back and fabric seat with 4 buttons. They seem pretty basic. Appears to have just 2 pcs sewn together. Sides and top. The interior foam is pretty much shot.

I wrote one earlier but this forum wiped my message out....
anyway, here's basic instructions:
1. remove seat from chair frame
2. remove bottom (cambric or cardboard)
3. mark for front and back
4. remove cover
5. mark wood for bottom
6. mark wood for front and back centers
7. cut a square of fabric at least two inches larger than the wood frame
8. fold the fabric in half and make small notches at the ends of the fold, so you have two center marks when you open it up
9. center the wood on the fabric
10. draw around the wood to the center marks and don't forget to add a goodly amount for your sewing and then a bit for padding
11. fold your fabric in half and cut both sides symetrically
12. cut your boxing to size
13. cut your welt
14. sew welt, attach to seat fabric
15. add boxing
16. cut foam to wood form, adding 1/2" over the wood
17. glue foam to wood
18. add dacron if you like
19. using the center marks, place your cover over the foam, making sure the welt is down, then staple your centers on the marks. Use a tape measure to ensure the same measurment around your boxing as you attach it.
20. staple on a welt around the bottom of the seat, use cardboard stripping to stiffen it.
21. replace with new cambric (if you like)
22. install seat on frame.

If you wish to replace the buttons, you will of course do that before you put on the cambric and before you put it on the frame. However, do you really want buttons where you sit? Doesn't sound comfy to me.

Hope I've been able to help a bit.
