I am designing a deck/porch in front of my house which will be not more than 1' off the ground. I am torn between putting in a wood deck with no railing (local codes require railings for decks over 18" off the ground) or laying brick pavers and making a patio. Can anyone tell me the average per sq. ft. cost difference between wood and pavers? I have to assume pavers are more expensive, but by how much. I would prefer the pavers as I believe they would look much nicer, but my wife is concerned with the cost. I need ammunition to help convince my wife that pavers are the way to go.

Thanks

ChuckG,

The costs below are estimated and this will vary by region.

Pavers run $5- $8 square foot installed - Roughly $2.00 per sq foot for pavers.

A wood deck may run $11 on up installed and that is just for decking area. Material cost will vary but a W/T deck would be approx. $6.00 per sq. ft. (this includes railings)

Best advice is to estimate the area you are wanting to cover and get estimates from your local suppliers. Nothing like cost comparison first hand and this ensures that the costs above are not taken as an "exact cost".

Hope this helps!

Doug,

Thank you for your response. I will check local suppliers as we have several in the area. From what you said, I believe I can get the patio I want, and my wife will be happy. Imagine that, the best of both worlds. :-)

you might also think about Maintenance Cost.. while neither option is completely without maintenance.. I think that wood decks require alot more maintenance. Cleaning, sealing, and finishing.. with a stone or paver patio, you may have to hose it down and if you dry set it, add sweep more sand between the stones.. but thats about it.. Also, a stone patio will last alot longer than a wood deck..

Aesthetically, I also think for the front of a house, a stone patio looks nicer than wood.

I put in a flagstone patio this past year and it cost me about $4K for a 425 sq feet..

pavers are probably cheaper.. but from Doug's installed estimate $8 per square foot.. probably not by much...
