Is it possible to replace a builder-installed gas fireplace with a wood burning one?

You can do a lot of things. But you dont say just what you have now or how it is put in. what kind of room you have for it .is it on an outside wall. INFO INFO ;) ED

The fireplace is a propane burning unit, ventless, and is on an exterior wall. It emits no heat whatsoever and is cost-prohibitive to operate. It is for looks only. We would like to change it out and make it a functional fireplace but we would like to avoid the cost of completely tearing out a wall and the roof of the house to do it...

Look around at lennox.com they have some that would vent right out the wall there for you then look at heatilator for what they have also that will vent right out the wall;) ED

Interesting that the vent free is not putting out heat. I do not hear that very often.
If you stick with gas and want heat go the direct vent route. If you want burn wood and want some heat try the Brentwood EPA Phase II unit. Both of these can be found at wwwlennxohearthproducts.com
