I have been away from home for the past 4 months and left my thermostat set on 80 while I was gone. When I returned home last night I turned it down to 70 and it cooled off pretty good. This morning there was air coming out of the vents but barely . . . and it isn't even cold, just cool. This afternoon, there is even less air coming out and to call it cool is pushing it. The fan is working fine and the intake filter has been cleaned. The intake vent doesn't seem to be pulling much air in either. Any ideas what could be causing this? It's a 6 yr old Ruud heat/air pump.

If you can directly see your coils on the inside unit (air handler) look to see if they are covered with ice. If you can't get to them to inspect them, look at the unit outside, if the larger of the two freon pipes coming into the unit has ice on it, in either case, there is a fair chance that your system has frozen either due to restricted air flow, or low freon.

Otherwise, one of few other things that can lower the amount of air being moved as well as affecting heat transfer woulld be the fan itself freewheeling on the motor shaft, or a broken belt (if a belt drive)

Amanda,
I am having a similar problem. Did you get this fixed? What was finally wrong? How much did it cost to get it fixed? Please email me at k2jujubug@yahoo.com
