Hello all, first time on the forum. =)
Seeking some advice on sealing a set of redwood patio furniture. I'm still not sure if this forum is the best place to ask this, but I figure it's patio-deck related so what the heck.
We've got a nice redwood table and 4 chairs that I am trying to seal with a clear deck / patio furniture sealer. I'm having a problem with putting the stuff on in that it seems like fine wood pulp keeps coming up from the surface when I try to apply a coat. Looks like pencil eraser shavings when you get done vigorously erasing something and there are little slivers of rubber eraser and paper pulp all over. I am ending up having to put a coat on, wipe the surface clean again with a slightly damn rag, wiping the brush off and putting another coat on. This takes forever, and I've only got the table top and part of one chair done.
What I figure is there is some sort of method / cleaner to prep the surface so this doesn't happen, and would love some advice on doing just that.
In prepping the surface so far, I lightly sanded with a very fine grit sandpaper, went over that with tack-cloth and then over that with a slightly damp rag, trying to get the surface as clean as possible. This is brand-new furniture, having no sealant or any stain or anything on it. The brush I'm using is a high quality white bristle brush made for stains / varnishes. The sealant is specifically made for this sort of thing, so says the guy at Home Depot.
Oh, and yes, I realize redwood has excellent inate properties for resisting moisture and rotting, but would like this set to last many years.
Ideas? TIA!

What product are you using to finish the furniture?
How old is the product? Was it shaken at the vendor within the past two weeks? Have you strained the contents of the can? It sounds as if there is some debris in the material.

The product is 'Behr premium clear weatherproofing wood sealer & finish'. Says it's for decks, furniture, etc. We bought that about 2 weeks ago and I've stirred it very well, looks very smooth. I don't see anything floating around in it.
