Our A/C quit cooling today, and I found the compressor & fan outside were not going. I had a serviceman respond who was took one look at it and said I needed a new unit??? However, with a nudge, the fan started. After running the fan awhile, the compressor tries to start. I think the capacitor is bad. Any thoughts, thanks.

i would think the capacitor is bad for the fan.... the compressor is more then likly out on thermo overload... try letting it cool off or with the power off cool the compressor off with a hose... replace the capacitor and try again.... make sure all the wires are tight

I had a simular problem a few years ago, It turn out that the Compressor fan needed some oil in the bearings. Look at the fan and see if you can find a oil plug on the bearing housing, then add some oil. I used SAE30 and the fan starts and runs fine now.

Same problem last year. Had condenser fan motor and two capacitors replaced. Running just fine. Get a second opinion.
