I am in upstate NY (temps range from near 0 in winter to near 100 in summer) and looking to replace 11 windows and a slider. It seems like everyone just wants to quote you and sell you their "best" window for $6-700/window. One dealer didn't give me a quote but said they sell Simonton windows besides their own. I've read some good things about them on the board. What model would I want and at what price? Also my slider is 68" inches across so it isn't standard. Again, what model and price? Thanks!!

11 windows and a slider, and they are talking $600 to $700 a hole?? TOO MUCH MONEY, unless you're looking at something like Sierra Pacific, Pella, Marvin, etc. There, you are looking at high end windows -- not a bad price!

(Don't go shopping for a Cadillac and expect to pay a Chevy price for it!!)

A 68" wide slider?? Are you SURE?? Where are you measuring the 68" from and to?

Measure the frame from outside to outside. What you are after is the size of the rough opening that the slider is sitting in. Sliders have tempered glass. That stuff is MADE to size, not CUT to size. Window mfgrs. all use the same size panes (width by height) for their sliders. Thicknesses will vary, but that is easy. But to make a pane that is 2" NARROWER than standard, the tempering plant has to shut down production and reset their jigs. The CUSTOMER is going to pay for THAT!! A 68" wide slider will run in the same neighborhood as a Porsche or a Ferrari!!!

Two salesmen measured it at 68". They referred to it as a "builder's door". They said a lot of builders get these odd measurements once in a while and use them.

Simonton Reflections 5100 is a top notch window InMyHumbleOpinion. Welded sash, mechanical frame.

With LowE glass you're looking at less than $200 for a window up to about 36x60. Tripple glazing might be cost effective in your area, add about $20 for that.

That's just the window. Install will run $50-75. So the company has less than $300 in a window. Now negotiage from there.

We live in Upstate NY too and we built 5 years ago and our builder installed all Simonton windows. The casement (crank-out)window seals have gone in both window sashes two times each. Now that's enough to make me replace that window with a different style before this winter, but the good news is that each time one of those seals went I called the local distributer (who my builder went through) and Simonton replaced the sash with no arguments since Simonton provides a 5-year warranty.
