View Full Version : Adding AC vents

I want to add an AC vent into a walk-in closet that I am converting to a Server room.

Is it just a matter of splicing the duct up in the attic and adding the vent grill or is there more to it?

TIA!

Probably not but you must also add a return vent for the hot air to leave the room. With just a new vent you are trying to pressurize a room with a unit that is not designed to do that. So you have to add a return vent to release the hot air. Example: Turn on your faucet full blast and try and fill a plastic bottle with water. Water goes every where but when you compensate for the air leaving the bottle the water quits splattering. Same principle applies for your a/c vent in the closet. Can't get to the return run put a vent in the door or cut one into the wall into an area served by a return vent.

Thanks.

I neglected to mention I was going to add a bathroom fan to suck the hot air back into the attic.

Thanks again.

You are going to suck that cool air back into the hot attic with a bathroom vent fan. I suggest returning thru the door or possibly thru the bottom of the door if you have enough space.

Don't use the bath fan period. Several reasons. You will be sending conditioned air into an unconditioned environment. In summer or winter you can get condensation in attic ruining insulation in attic, mold and mildew grow, and if your attic is not vented properly you could actually have attic air blow back through the fan opening. How are you going to monitor this fan? Leave it on all the time? Sorry to get so intense. Anyway the fan is a bad idea.

Ok, bathroom fan is out.

From what I am hearing, a simple grill-plate cut throught the drywall out to the room should be sufficient?

Thanks for all the info.

Now I'm off to the electrical board to learn how to wire a dedicated circuit to the closet to supply sufficient power.

I guess the builder never thought this closet would never be used for anything but hanging clothes. No AC, no ventilation, no power.

Then again, I'm probably the only guy in town who has enough servers to run his own ISP out of a closet!

Thanks again.

You have seen the light so go and wire your circuit and good luck. One suggestion on the dedicated circuit be sure the power is off when you do it. I got an old screwdriver that is not really a screwdriver anymore to remind me of what electricity can do.
