I'm building a gate (for a redwood patio fence), using 2x4 framing and 1x6 boards. All the plans I've read say "for gates up to 36 inches." I'm working with a space 48" wide. My 4x4's are 5 feet high, plus three feet in concrete footings, and are connected to other 4x4s by 2x4 fence rails. My concern is the load of a gate 46" feet wide on the 4x4. Am I much better off building two narrower gates, or will the 4x4 adequately support the weight and width of one gate 46" wide?
Thanks

It is better to build two smaller gates than one. Less weight on the supports and hinges, fewer problems. Gates tend to rack more than anything. Building a good gate is a skill. Crossbracing and good hinge installation are quite important. Take into consideration having to adjust it later on when you select hardware and place fasteners. If the 4x4 warps you will have to take up the slack, so to speak.
Hope this helps.
