Hello everyone, I am seeking some advice. I am looking to buy a home very very soon. It has these awful looking gawky floor heaters in two of the rooms. I would like to replace the system with a central air and heat system. This is an old house built in 1907 has never had ductwork done but has voids between the celing and the next floor. For a 2 story home would it be feasable to have a system installed? And would it cost an immense amount? I heard contractors are total rip offs who look for nothing but overcharging. I am getting my loan with some money for home improvemet money added in, but to determine how much I am curious how much a job like this could end up costing. My prefrence is for gas heating.
Is this a do-it-yourself kind of job?
Does anyone know where I could encounter some honest people in referrals?
I live in Norfolk, VA.
Please email me or post here. Thanks!

What you want done can be done and it will be expensive. You have the need for some specilaized work that not every contractor wants to do or can do because of the time it will take to do the job. First place to look(yellow pages) is to find contractors who specialize in this type of installation and have them come and give you an estimate. Check their references even visit some of their old jobs. Because what you are going to pay is more like an investment so treat it like an investment.

Its impossible to tell you what a cost would be without seeing your house. What influences the cost is ease of access for ductwork, type of system, mfg.of system, adequate electrical service - the list goes on. Get bids from 3 different HVAC contractors and compare them.
By the way , I am a contractor and resent it being implied that I overcharge everyone.
Look into the contractors overheads and other costs and you will get a better idea
of the costs we incur. We have to make a living too.
No, this is not a do it yourself job.
