We bought new construction last year. House has wood burning fireplace with gas starter. Last year burned a cord of wood. Ended season with a chimney sweep log and a few small fires as instructed on the log.

What do we need to do before starting our wood burning season this year? Have the chimney/fireplace inspected? Cleaned? Cleaned only if inspection says it needs to be cleaned?

Thank you.

It is recommended to have a chimney inspected and cleaned each year.
Find a certified professional chimney sweep company with a video camera to do the inspecting and cleaning.
For a preliminary look, shine a flashlight up your chimney. If you can't see the flue liner interior surface itself due to creosote buildup, it should be cleaned.
Good Luck!

Oops, mine was cleaned with a plumbing auger last year. This was after I took a mirror to see if anything was blocking it. It actually worked well, since the chim has a liner. I've got a wood stove, so you can't just look in there like you can with a fireplace.
