I've spent the last three afternoons trying to get this door installed, and I'm sure this is something that just takes practice...however, I can't get this frame/door to be square and open without rubbing somewhere. If I shim here, it rubs there, if I shim there, it rubs here. When I lay the door and frame flat on the ground, there is an even gap of about 1/8" all the way around. Why won't it just stay put when I put it in place???? THe main problem is the upper corner above the latch. WHen I shim the opposite bottom corner, it gets a little better, but not before the lower latch side corner starts rubbing. ANy tips/tricks on how to get this thing in right??

I'm certainly no expert, but a couple of suggestions
- check the threshold for level and shim to get that level first
- plumb the hinge side next with the jambs centered in the rough opening
- Is the RO basically square? If not pretty close you may need to make adjustments to the rough framing first.

Hope this helps

UNLESS THE DOOR HAS BEEN ALTERED, you know that it is square, and the the sides are parallel. I will almost guarantee you that the rough opening ISN'T! (THAT is the purpose of the shims!)

Start with the hinge side. USe the shims to adjust it so that your level says it's plumb (Use at LEAST a 4' level)

Now, check your level for ACCURACY. Hold it against the jamb that is "plumb", and, keeping the same end of the level up, rotate the level 180 degrees. Is the jamb still "plumb"? If so, your level is accurate. If the reading is different, your level is NOT accurate. You'll need to compensate for it. Put some masking tape on one end, and ALWAYS keep that end UP. Adjust the jamb so that it leans LEFT when one side of the level is used and the same amounth to the RIGHT when the other end is used. NOW the jamb is PLUMB!! Set that side.

Adjust the HEIGHT of the latch side of the jamb until the gap across the top of the door is even.

Now, using the shims as needed, adjust the latch side of the jamb until the gap is even top to bottom.

Your door is set! Case it.
