We had a gas fireplace installed last year, this summer we noticed black streaks outside on our siding above the vent.
Anyone know wht could be causing this?
Thanks,

Hello: Vick

Black streaks are a sign of incomplete combustion of the gas being burned. Which means the flames are not burning correctly, thus incompletely.

In a gas fire place, it is exceptable to have some yellow tipped flames to provide the visual effect of a real wood burning fireplace.

However, to what extent of yellow flames is questionable. Basically, only the tips of the flames should be yellowed. If more than that amount is visable, the burner may not be properly adjusted or there is another factor effecting the condition.

If the condition is not too severe, it may be considered normal. To be sure, it might be a good suggestion to have the condition and the appliance checked by a professional in person.

The above post is correct. In addtion, you might want to check the following:
A)Check the installtion manual and confirm that the logs are installed in the correct location or placement. If not, placed as designed, you may be getting flame impingment on the logs which can cause the carbon or soot to develop.

B) At the point where the burner sits down onto the orifice, you will find an air shuttter adjustment. If you open it all the way the flame will get bluer, if you close it down, the flamce will get dark yellow to orange. As stated above, you want mainly blue with yellow tips. Consult you manual for this information as well.

Having said all of this, the company who installed the product should be able to provide some help.
