The cooling fan on my Day & Night heat pump has stopped working. The compressor still seems to function but without the fan the unit gets very hot.

You need service asap. Without that fan, your compressor will, at best, shut itself down on thermal overload. You most certainly aren't moving any significant amounts of heat.
