sorry, couldn't find a better category for this question

I want to lay down about 6 inches of hardpack on my driveway, but for now, mud seems to be percolating up through the existing gravel. is this what that fabric is for, i.e. will it keep the clay from coming up through the gravel,

I also want to remove some of the fill dirt from in front of the garage, lay down stone then gravel and eventually put asphalt, again would this fabric be a good diea, and if so, does it go below the stone, or between the stone and hardpack.

thanks, all.

Vermontdoc,

I can't help you. But I will suggest that you post this in the Concrete forum as well. What you are asking is really better fitted to that forum, and I just think your chances of getting an answer are probably better there.

When I had my driveway built, the topsoil was removed and a six inch layer of crusher run was laid and compacted by a skid steer (bobcat). Later, some gravel was added. No mud. I suspect that not having a compacted base under the gravel allows it to sink or mud to rise, as the case may be.

Later when I get around to having it paved, the base is already there.

The fabric allows water to seep through, but not sand, clay, grass roots, etc.
Place it over the clay before the gravel is added and compacted down.
Good Luck!
