I am installing an approx 2'x2' drywall patch and find that wherever the new and old drywall meet I end up with a pretty obvious ridge after I am finished taping and mudding. Does anyone have any tricks to avoid this?

Thanks,
Dan

Have you already taped it? Why is there a ridge? Did the patch flush up with the existing wall? Hard to say until these ?'s are answered. If you have already taped the patch then keep adding mud to either side of the ridge to straighten it out.

It is taped. And the new and old drywall were flush before I started. Maybe I should describe it as a hump rather than a ridge. Maybe I just need to add more joint compound on either side to make the change more gradual?

That usually happens with joints of that nature. A good way to see whats going on is to put your knife across the hump. The knife acts as a straight edge. now you can see if one side needs more filling than the other. But definitely put more coats of mud, to 12" on each side, to float out the joint. It's pretty hard to do these patches because you may have one side filled in and the top gives you trouble. Just stay with it and it will be fine.
