I am thinking about replacing a few windows in my house and I would like to attempt to do this myself. The house is vinyl and the windows are metal. I would like to replace them with Vinyl replacement windows. Can someone recommend a book that I could buy? Or somewhere else that I can look that will give me step-by-step insturctions? I have Home Depot and Lowe's near me. I also have a company that sell Weather Shield replacement windows. Which ones should I get?
Thanks for you help,
Brian

You want a book you can READ, just search deeper into this forum -- Tn...Andy has written several.
Tou want a book you can BUY -- don't know what to tell you -- Andy can't advertise!!
OOPSS!! I forgot!! I'm not supposed to use any humor in here.
Seriously bwithka, the job is probably easier than you think. HOWEVER!! There are SO many way to trim out a window with vinyl siding, if you can show us pictures it will help immensely!!
The easy way is to get the pictures, post them on a website that you create at Yahoo!, Anglefire -- wherever -- then post the URL for that site so that we can see them.

Brian,
The limiting factor will be the tile on the inside. Pretty sure that you don't want to mess with that.
Your existing aluminum windows will have frames that are about 2" thick (from the inside to the outside). Vinyls will have frames that are about 3" thick.
A couple of options here.
You can leave the aluminum frames in place, removing the glass and the mullions, and order your vinyl windows to fit insde that hole. You will lose most of the inside sill around the windows.
Or, you can pull enough of the siding to allow you to pull the aluminum frames, order the vinyls as a 'new consruction' size and install them so that they will butt to the tile, just like your aluminum windows do. If you do that, the windows will project out about an inch farther than the current windows do. You will need to cut the siding back so that you can trim and seal them accordingly.
Maybe Andy will see things a bit differently than I do., and have a different suggestion. I'll e-mail him about this thread and see what happens.

I don't mind taking up some of the tile. Really doesn't bother me. I could cut that tile out in no time. I would rather not mess with the siding. It is easier to play with the tile then the siding. I am having trouble getting a pro to do this job b/c I only have one other window that need to be done. This job is too small for most of the pros.
I am worried about how it will look from the outside if I install a replacement window that will fit within the existing frame. More specifically, the bottom of the replacement window because the existing frame slops down and the replacement window will be flat. Doesn't that cause me to have a gap on the bottom?
Thanks for your help,
