I pretty much know nothing about air conditioners and the place I just moved into has a window unit that doesn't look like it was installed too well. It's starting to get cold and I've noticed a definite draft coming from the window beneath the a/c. Any suggestions as to what I should do to fix it? I figured I could just duct tape the area around the a/c, but if anybody knows a better way I'd really appreciate your help.

Thanks!

At home depot or lowes you can find some foam strips in different sizes that you could get to push in there first then put tape over this if you want. Some stores have covers that you can get to put over the whole unit out side. This helps keep air out also ED;)

You don't say where you live but if you are in a cold climate and only cover the outside part of the a/c then you will fill the cabinet up with frost.
You must do something like covering the face of the unit and seal it good to prevent moist inside air from freezing inside the unit.

I do this every year. Buy the cover for the outside from Lowes or Home Depot and secure tightly. The put the insulating foam around any areas that need it. (You need to do this even in the summer). For the face of the air conditioner, you can buy a quilted type cover; they run about 15 bucks; kinda pricey. Or make something of your own. Use a thick fabric (I even used old beach towels one year) and secure it. I then just lower the blinds and one one is the wiser. It gets very cold here and I experience no drafts. And it beats the heck out of removing and replacing them every year.
