I need a good stain blocking primer (to seal in nicotine stains) that does not cost an arm and a leg because I have to do an entire house with it....and that also does not have strong fumes because I have small children in the house. The Lowes near me has one by Kilz called Kilz Sealer/Primer Stainblocker. It is 7.47 a gallon or 41.93 for a 5 gallon bucket. Anyone use this? It says it is ideal for water and smoke stains. Also, does primer spatter a lot? I have to do ceilings too.
And another unrelated question....what is a good brand of spackle? And what type of sandpaper do I need for spackling and sanding holes? And one more...one of the rooms I am doing is fake wood paneling that has previously been painted over. Can I use the same type of primer for this since it is already been painted...or is there a special type of primer? And what type of spackle do I use to fix holes in the paneling? Whew....I think that is it!! LOL!!
Thanks so much. I am new at this and will be doing the majority of the work myself.

Kilz Sealer/Primer Stainblocker
The kilz latex product is suffering from bad press here. I don't use it, so I cannot say. Odd that the gallons are cheaper than the 5 gallon bucket per gallon.
Paint fumes are annoying. Good ventilation is a big help. Fumes from latex products don't pose a hazard to the general population.
Primer is no more prone to splatter than paint of an equivalent quality. Good roller pads help. Drop cloths made of cloth are less likely to create puddles to track off of the cloth, and less likely to be slick as plastic is to reduce the chance of falling. A sturdy six foot step ladder is a good tool to have for painting, unless you are as tall as I am.
DAP is a good spackle. Generally, the top of the line vinyl spackle sold at the box stores is good.
Sanding spackle. 120 grit paper.
The Kilz primer should perform equally well on the painted paneling. Spackle the holes in the paneling before priming.
Hope this helps.

Kilz (oil) will work on nicotine, but smells pretty bad. Use with maximum ventilation. Kilz2 (latex) won't be effective in blocking the stains.
Dap and Red Devil are good brands for spackle.
120 grit will be fine.
The Kilz products are slightly thinner than paint, so you might encounter a little more spatter than average.
You can use either of the Kilz products that you choose for the previously painted paneling.

What do you think about Zinnsler B-I-N Shellac base primer-sealer? Would this be okay....and how are the fumes from this?
Thanks again,
Annie

Fumes from solvent based materials are all inflammable and consequently pose more of a hazard than those of latex products. Proper ventilation is important. It is a good product, though.

whichever primer your gonna use its best to wash these surfaces with tsp (wear rubber gloves). You'll have a better finish because of it, depending how heavily coated with nicotine it's pretty gross to wash but........

BIN is an excellent choice for your situation, but smells just as bad if not worse than Kilz.
It is also much thinner, making spatter a greater possibility.

Thanks Chris. I saw that you posted that up above but I wasn't sure if you were implying that it was a good spackle for the walls AND the paneling.

Bullseye 123 is a water-based product.
BIN is a pigmented shellac.
